ice cream dogs popsicle summer fruit

Summertime dog friendly ice cream popsicles (that humans can eat as well*)

We are currently in the middle of the first summer heat wave, and since there is not much else that we can do at the moment, we decided to play around with some ingredients we have at home and make dog-friendly (and human-friendly) fruity popsicles.

Step 1: Popsicle moulds

Unfortunately we don´t have the proper popsicle mould at home. I somehow forget to buy them every year and by the time a heat wave comes, they are already sold out everywhere. So we had to think outside the box and decided on:

  • Paper cups
  • Wooden picnic knives (maybe forks and spoons might work as well).

Step 2: Ingredients

Because of the DIY moulds we came up with, we had to choose the ingredients that would make the mixture quite thick, to hold the wooden knife – so, for thickness, I chose a banana. To make them super refreshing, we used a watermelon. And to add some additional flavour, I used frozen blueberries that were in the freezer. In the end I sprinkled freeze dried strawberries into the cup, to add some “surprise” pieces of fruit. Honestly, you can add any fruit you have at home, but make sure you also use a more starchy fruit (like a banana) that will hold the mixture together.

Step 3: Process

Put all the fruits into a blender and mix until you get a smooth mixture. Make sure you don´t put in any seeds from the watermelon. Pour the mixture into the cups and hopefully it will be thick enough to hold the stick.

Leave it in the freezer for a couple of hours (depends on your freezer) and the end result should look like this:

I made a lot of mixture and since there are 5 of us (2 humans and 3 dogs) I made one for each of us. In the end it turned out that these popsicles are massive, so try to regulate the amount that you pour into the cup/mould. 🙂

But, our dogs are always willing to help each other out, so this is the way they eat it:

These popsicles contain a lot of water from the watermelon, so they are more like icicles. I will also try to make a more creamier version (like a soft serve ice cream)- I will post it here as well, so stay tuned! And most importantly, stay cool during this heat wave. <3
