As you might already know, I take great care of my dogs´ nutrition. This year forced me to take an even further step due to Ziggy´s health issues, and the side effects of administering daily medication, which severely affected her digestive system.
I started cooking her meals with exclusively 1 type of meat per meal, which she loves, as it is a novelty – but getting her to eat the pills, that is a different story. I tried several types of wet food, but in the end I came and stayed with KIVO steamed meat sausages.
Why? Because:
- the meat is monoprotein (just 1 type of meat per sausage)
- gently steamed meat, which retains high amount of nutrients and makes it easy to digest
- added vegetables and fruit make it more than just meat, it´s a full meal
- I especially like the texture, which is firm, but soft at the same time: you can easily cut the sausage meat into smaller pieces, to use as training treats, or add to your dog´s regular meal, or – most importantly – you can hide the pills into the meat easily, and your dog will surely eat it (Ziggy practically inhales it)
Here are some more of their benefits:
- Easy to Portion: The sausage shape allows you to slice a piece right off, whether you need a tiny piece for training or a chunk for dinner.
- Travel-Friendly: No need for bowls of raw food when you’re out for the day — just pack a few slices in a small container, and you’re good.
- Minimal Mess: These sausages aren’t greasy or crumbly, so there’s less drama when you serve them, even outside.
- Adaptable to Feeding Styles: Use them for a full meal, as a topper, in enrichment toys, or as training rewards — one product, many uses.
- Solid Storage: They keep well unopened, and once open, you can refrigerate or freeze slices. That means less waste and more flexibility.
- Transparency in Ingredients: We believe in being open about what goes into your dog’s meals. KIVO’s mono-protein format and short ingredient lists make that easy.
There are 3 flavours available:
KIVO Steamed Beef (600g)
KIVO Steamed Duck (600g)
KIVO Steamed Lamb (600g)
If you need any more reasons, here are some practical tips and ideas for using these sausages, based on different scenarios:
Daily Meals
- Use the sausage as the main ingredient.
- The general guideline is about 20 g per kilogram of dog per day, but adjust based on your dog’s size, age, and activity.
- For small dogs, slice neatly; for larger dogs, you might give a few slices as their meal.
- Mix with some veggies, or a little bit of their usual food, if needed.
Training Sessions
- Cut small cubes — you don’t need massive pieces to reward your dog.
- Store training slices in a small container or treat pouch.
- Because the sausage has a firmer texture, it’s less likely to crumble and more likely to hold up during intense training.
Outdoor / Adventure Use
- Pre-slice enough for your trip and keep in a reusable container or silicone pouch.
- Use as a high-value snack during long walks, hikes, or camping days.
- After exercise, share a little to help your dog recover energy in a wholesome way.
Enrichment & Mental Games
- Dice small bits into a lick mat or enrichment toy.
- Hide slices in sniffing games, or stuff them into puzzle feeders.
- Use as a reward in scent work or tracking games — the sausage’s aroma is usually very attractive to dogs.
Meal Topper / Appetite Booster
- If your dog is fussy or having a low appetite, gently warm a slice (or crumble a little) and mix it into their usual food.
- The natural meatiness helps entice many reluctant eaters.
A few basic considerations:
- Transitioning Food: When switching to KIVO sausages, introduce them gradually over 3–5 days, mixing with your dog’s current food to avoid digestive upset.
- Portion Control: As with any food, make sure you adapt the amount based on your dog’s weight, activity level, and metabolism.
- Storage: Once opened, keep the sausage refrigerated and use within a few days. You can also freeze slices in portions so you always have some ready.
- Check with Your Vet: Particularly if your dog has a medical condition, allergies, or special dietary needs, it’s always wise to talk with your vet before making large changes.
I sincerely hope that if you find yourself in a similar situation, these sausages will be helpful for you and your dog. <3
